A licensed electrician has already passed an exam on code and theory. Re-testing that in an interview wastes the only forty-five minutes you get. The questions below aim at what the license did not measure: how they troubleshoot, which environments they are actually fluent in, how they behave around safety pressure, and what they do when a customer or a GC pushes.
First: decide what you're hiring for
Residential service, commercial service, new construction, and industrial controls are different jobs sharing a license. Pick the role, then pick six to eight questions.
Troubleshooting
“A 20A circuit trips intermittently, mostly in the evening. A previous electrician already replaced the breaker. How do you approach it?”
- Why you're asking
- The best single question in the set. It rewards narrowing and punishes parts-swapping.
- What a strong answer contains
- Establishes whether it trips with nothing plugged in, because that splits a permanent wiring fault from a load problem in one step. Reads the breaker's diagnostic flash code if it has one, which distinguishes series arc, parallel arc, ground fault, and overload. Chases the “in the evening” clue to identify what load comes on. On the wiring side, inspects terminations at the device, panel, and junctions for a series arc from a loose connection, and checks for a shared neutral: on a multi-wire branch circuit a single-pole AFCI trips because current leaves on its hot and returns partly on the shared neutral, and the fix is a two-pole AFCI or separated neutrals. Strong candidates may also mention a downstream neutral-to-ground bond, a neutral-to-ground voltage check, or a megohmmeter for suspected insulation damage.

- Replace the breaker again, or “AFCIs are junk.” The second one is a real opinion held by real electricians, and swapping in a standard breaker is a code violation that removes the fire protection and leaves the fault in the wall.
“How do you find an intermittent fault that isn't present when you're on site?”
- What a strong answer contains
- Describes narrowing by history and conditions, load testing, thermal inspection of terminations, and knowing when to leave monitoring in place rather than guessing.

- “You just have to keep checking things.”
“When do you use voltage drop testing, and how?”
- Why you're asking
- Separates electricians who measure from electricians who substitute.
- What a strong answer contains
- Under load, and explains why a reading with no load can look fine on a bad connection.

“Tell me about a fault you couldn't find.”
- What a strong answer contains
- Specific, including what they tried and how they escalated. Escalating well is a skill.

Code application
“A customer wants to add an EV charger to a twenty-year-old 100-amp panel. Walk me through it.”
- Why you're asking
- This is increasingly the actual job, and it exercises load calculation, service capacity, and customer conversation at once.
- What a strong answer contains
- Runs a load calculation rather than eyeballing it, and can name which method they would use. For an existing dwelling that usually means the measured-demand approach, working from twelve months of utility interval data and applying the code multiplier to the recorded peak, which frequently clears a panel that a worst-case calculation would condemn. Treats the charger as a continuous load. Knows that a listed energy management system is a legitimate alternative to a service upgrade when the calculation comes up short, because it lets the service be calculated on the managed maximum instead of full nameplate. Addresses permitting, and explains the cost difference to the customer without either overselling the upgrade or hand-waving the math.

- “Sure, if there's a slot.” Also weak in the other direction: quoting a service upgrade without running the calculation, which is the expensive version of the same guess.
“What working space is required in front of a panel, and what do you do when there isn't any?”
- What a strong answer contains
- Knows the requirement and, more importantly, knows what to do in the very common real situation where an existing installation does not meet it.

- Cites the number and stops.
“How do you handle finding a code violation in work you didn't do?”
- What a strong answer contains
- Documents, communicates the risk plainly, distinguishes hazards requiring immediate action from non-compliant-but-safe legacy work, does not use it as a sales lever.
Safety
“When has a GC or customer pressured you to work something hot, and what did you do?”
- Why you're asking
- Every experienced electrician has faced this. The answer tells you what they do when it costs them.
- What a strong answer contains
- A specific instance, what they said, what it cost.
- What a memorized answer sounds like
- “I never work anything hot” with no story attached, which is either inexperience or a rehearsed answer.
“Walk me through your lockout/tagout process on a typical service call.”
- What a strong answer contains
- Describes what they do, including verification of de-energization, not what the policy says.
“How do you decide what PPE a task requires?”
- What a strong answer contains
- Ties selection to the task and the available fault energy rather than habit.
The interview tells you how they talk. This tells you what they know.

“What's the mix of your last three years: residential service, commercial, new construction?”

- Resumes flatten this and it is the highest-value thing to know. A strong new construction electrician placed on residential service calls will look like a bad hire for reasons that are not their fault.
“Describe a job where you had to work around another trade's schedule.”
- Why you're asking
- Reveals jobsite behavior, which no technical question will.
“What would have kept you at your last shop?”
- Why you're asking
- More revealing than asking why they are leaving. Tells you what this person needs and whether you have it.
Questions worth skipping
Pure code lookup questions. The licensing exam covered it, every electrician uses the book, and testing recall selects for memorization rather than judgment.
“What's your greatest strength?” You will get a prepared answer.
What the interview can't tell you
An interview measures how well an electrician talks about electrical work. That is genuinely correlated with skill, and it is more correlated with confidence. The strongest troubleshooter on your crew may be the worst interview you conduct this month.
Pair the conversation with something that measures capability directly, a hands-on board, a working day, or a structured skills assessment. And confirm the license at the issuing authority rather than accepting a number on a resume.

Should a licensed journeyman be asked technical questions at all?
Yes, but not code recall. Ask about troubleshooting and judgment, which the license did not test.
Who should conduct the technical portion?
A foreman or lead electrician if possible. They will hear the difference between a real answer and a fluent one.
How do I interview an apprentice?
Ask about fundamentals, safety instinct, and what they do when they do not know something. At that level, "I'd ask" is the right answer and confidence outrunning competence is the actual hazard.
Should I ask the same questions of every candidate?
For a given role, yes. Consistency is what makes candidates comparable and what makes a hiring decision defensible.
The EV charger and working space answers describe methods without citing NEC section numbers. The relevant provisions sit in Articles 220 and 625, the treatment of EV load changed between recent editions, and states adopt editions on their own schedules. Confirm against the edition your jurisdiction has adopted.
