Garage door work has a problem the licensed trades do not: almost anyone can call themselves a technician. There is no journeyman card, no state exam, and in most markets no license that attaches to the person rather than the company. So the resume you are reading was written without a credential behind it, and the two things that actually decide whether a hire works out, whether they can diagnose a door they have never seen and whether they can be trusted around a spring under tension, are not on it.
That makes the skills test the credential. It is the one filter you control.
What a credential tells you, and what it doesn't
Most states do not license garage door technicians at all. Where licensing exists it is usually a contractor license held by the business, which tells you the company was bonded and insured and nothing about the person on the truck. The industry's own credential, certification through the door and access industry's training bodies, is voluntary, and a candidate who holds one has shown up for a course and passed a written exam. That is real, and it is worth more than nothing.
It does not establish that they can read a door. It does not tell you whether they have set a hundred torsion springs or watched someone else set them. And it does not tell you which kind of technician you are getting, because installation, residential service, and commercial doors are different jobs that share a title. A candidate with six years of new-construction installs can hang a beautiful door and still be lost on their first week of service calls, where the job is diagnosis in someone's occupied garage with the customer standing behind them.
A question that reveals how a candidate thinks
Recall questions are the wrong instrument here. Wire gauges and spring charts are on the truck and every competent tech looks them up. Ask for reasoning instead, and pick a symptom that has a cheap, correct first step and an expensive, dangerous wrong one.
A customer says the opener runs, the door comes up a few inches, then it stops and drops back down. It worked fine yesterday. What do you do first, and what do you not do?
Look at the spring from the floor before touching anything, then check balance by hand with the door down and the opener released. Correct
A door that lifts a few inches and reverses on the way up is the opener hitting its force limit against a door it cannot lift, and the number one reason for that is a broken torsion spring. It announces itself: a loud bang from the garage the day it let go, and a visible gap in the coils where the spring separated. If the spring is intact, the next question is whether the door is balanced, and the only safe way to find out is with the door closed, the opener released, and the door lifted by hand. A balanced door stays where you leave it; one that drops has lost tension or a cable has come off a drum. Only once the door balances does the opener itself come into it. Photo eyes are not a suspect at all here, because photo eyes only stop the door on the way down.
Turn up the opener's up-force until it makes it to the top. Incorrect
This is what a handyman does, and it is the dangerous answer. Turning up the force makes the motor drag dead weight it was never built to lift, which strips gears, burns out the opener, and hides the actual failure until the door drops on something. A candidate who reaches for the force adjustment before the balance test has not been trained, or has been trained wrong.
Check the photo eyes for alignment and obstructions. Incorrect
The right check for the wrong symptom. Photo eyes only stop the door on the way down; they have no role in whether a door makes it up. A candidate who goes here first is pattern-matching to the most common service call rather than reasoning from the symptom in front of them.

The balance test is the right idea done the wrong way. Releasing a door that is partway up with a possibly broken spring puts a couple of hundred pounds of dead weight in the candidate's hands, and if it gets away from them it comes down on whatever is under it. The test is done with the door closed. A candidate who describes it any other way is going to get hurt on your payroll.
The strong answer is about sequence, and the sequence is about safety before diagnosis.
Look before touching. A broken torsion spring shows a gap in the coils, usually two or three inches, and the homeowner will often volunteer the loud bang if asked. A cable that has jumped its drum is hanging slack. Both are visible from the floor, and both mean the door is now dead weight and the opener is out of the picture until the counterbalance is fixed.
The balance test, done correctly. Door closed, opener released, door lifted by hand to waist height and let go. It should stay put. This is the single most useful five seconds in residential service, and how a candidate describes it tells you whether they were trained by someone who cared.
Then, and only then, the opener. Up-force and travel limits get adjusted on a door that already balances, never on one that does not. The reason is not just that the adjustment masks the problem; it is that an opener straining against a dead door strips its drive gear and eventually fails, turning a spring replacement into a spring and opener replacement that the customer will correctly blame on the shop.
A good candidate will add that a torsion spring is rated for cycles rather than years, that the standard residential spring is built to a 10,000-cycle baseline, and that on a two-spring door the second spring has the same cycles on it and should be replaced at the same time.
The weak answer is "I'd bump the force up and see if it makes it." That candidate might even get the door to the top. They are also the one who will strand a customer with a stripped opener a week later, and the one you will be explaining to your insurer.
Six areas a garage door assessment should cover
Diagnosis on service calls. Working from a symptom to a cause, separating counterbalance problems from opener problems from track and roller problems, and confirming with a test before condemning a part. This is the highest-value area for service roles and the one most shops never measure.
Springs and counterbalance. Torsion versus extension, how spring size is determined from the door's weight rather than guessed, wind direction, why cycle life matters, the containment cable that every extension spring needs and many are missing, and the safety practice around all of it: proper winding bars, never a screwdriver, locking pliers on the track before tension comes off.
Openers and entrapment protection. What UL 325 requires of a residential operator, why photo eyes exist, the force-reversal test with a board laid flat under the door, and what to do with a twenty-year-old opener that has no photo eyes at all. This is where the liability lives.
Installation. Reading the opening, headroom and side room, setting tracks plumb and level, hanging the door so it seals and balances, and the entrapment test before the truck leaves. Where installers earn their pay and where callbacks come from.
Commercial doors and operators. Rolling steel, sectional commercial doors, high-cycle springs, jackshaft and trolley operators, three-button stations, safety edges, and the different customer, who is a facilities manager with a loading dock down rather than a homeowner.
Customer-facing judgment. Explaining a broken spring to a homeowner without talking down to them, the two-springs-or-one conversation, what to say when a customer wants to replace a spring themselves with a kit from the internet, and whether they can present repair versus replacement honestly when replacement pays better.
How contractors evaluate garage door technicians today
The ride-along. Most accurate and least scalable, and it cannot be done during business hours for a candidate who is currently employed. It is also uneven as a measurement: one candidate rides a day of opener installs and the next gets the door that came off its track on a Saturday.
Watching them set a spring in the shop. Excellent for what it measures, which is whether they are safe around stored energy and whether their hands know the work. Blind to diagnosis, and blind to how they talk to a homeowner, which is where most residential service hires actually fail.
A parts-and-terminology quiz. Cheap and consistent, and it mostly measures whether the candidate has read a catalog. A strong tech who came up in a shop that used different terminology looks weak on it, which is a bad filter.
Hiring and finding out. The default, and in this trade the finding-out sometimes involves an injury. Even when it does not, the callback cost is high and the customer damage is immediate, because the failure happens on the biggest moving object in someone's home. That is worth running the number on before treating it as the cheap option.

Frequently asked questions
Do garage door technicians need a license?
In most places, no. A handful of states and cities fold the work under a general or specialty contractor license held by the company, and the industry's own certification is voluntary. That is exactly why a skills test matters more here than in the licensed trades: there is no exam standing between a candidate and your truck.
Should I test installers and service techs differently?
Yes. An installer is measured on a door that is level, balanced, and passes its entrapment test when they leave. A service tech is measured on diagnosis in an occupied home with the customer watching. A strong installer can be a weak diagnostician and the reverse, and they usually apply for the same posting.
How long should a garage door skills test take?
Twenty to thirty minutes. Most candidates are employed and will abandon anything longer.
What about commercial door work?
Test it separately. Rolling steel, sectional commercial doors, and operators with three-button stations and safety edges are a different body of knowledge from residential service, and a residential tech who has never set a rolling steel door will not learn it from the assessment.
